How to apply for a digital nomad visa?
Each country has specific rules around applying for a digital nomad visa, but in general terms, the prerequisites include:
- Valid passport (always keep an eye on the expiry date of the document);
- Online proof of income , or in some cases, proof of enough money to sustain yourself.
- Most, but not all, require you to pay a processing fee
At the document submission stage, you will gather and submit all bank evidence and other supporting documents. Following this, you will be asked for further proof that you are, in fact, a digital nomad.
Once the visa application and documentation delivery steps are done, the responsible bodies of each country will analyze if the visa will be approved.
Visa delivery time
The time it takes for your digital nomad visa application to be approved depends on various factors. Some countries have a more efficient application process than others.
Make sure to submit the correct documents, as the period for processing your application will be extended until all missing requirements or corrections are received.
Additionally, it is recommended that you apply early, as processing times may increase during busy periods. It is also advisable to refrain from confirming any travel plans until you have obtained your visa.
How does a digital nomad visa work?
A digital nomad visa is a permit for remote workers, freelancers, and online entrepreneurs to enter and stay in a country for a certain period, typically for more than 90 days.
Such visas set specific parameters including validity periods, eligible countries, and activities that can and can’t be carried out. It’s important to do your research and familiarise yourself with the terms and conditions of the visa you’re applying for.
You may be asking yourself: but wouldn’t a tourist visa be easier? The answer lies in the length of stay, which is generally between 30 and 90 days. If you plan to stay longer than 3 months, you will typically need a digital nomad visa. Some notable benefits include:

The most popular digital nomad destinations in 2023
1. Spain
Thanks to its cultural richness and stunning climate, Spain’s digital nomad visa has quickly become the most sought-after digital nomad visa! Luckily, in December 2022, Spain passed the Startups Law, opening the door for digital nomads to move to Spain.
Spain’s digital nomad visa will be available to non-European Economic Area (EEA) nationals. European citizens already have the right to work remotely in Spain for up to 6 months.
This new visa opens for the possibility to live in Spain for up to 5 years, with Spain aiming to become a hub of digital entrepreneurship.
Basic conditions
You need:
- Proof of an employment relationship with your foreign company for at least 3 months prior, and then for a period of at least 1 year;
- Document proving work experience for more than 3 years;
- Highly qualified vocational qualification such as a bachelor’s degree, postgraduate degree, business school-leaving certificate, etc;
- Authorisation for telecommuting or teleworking.

2. Brazil
The visa for digital nomads in Brazil is also recent, and was launched in 2022. The country has a great opportunity to attract this type of visitor, as it has all the great qualities that digital nomads seek, including immense natural beauty and diversity!
The climate, the culture, and the relaxed tempo make it a must for travellers. Brazil’s digital nomad visa will give visitors the possibility to live in the country for one year.
Basic conditions
- Documents proving that you have work activities outside; Brazil, either employment or a company;
- Proof of criminal record of your place(s) of residence during the past 5 years;
- Health insurance valid on national territory;
- Monthly income of $1,500 or availability of $18,000 in a bank account.

3. Portugal
Portugal has also consistently been ranked as one of the most desirable destinations for digital nomads, due to its stunning coastline, warm weather, and low cost of living.
To assist digital nomads, the country offers visas for remote workers (Temporary Stay visa) and even for entrepreneurs (D2 visa) who wish to move to the Iberian nation. The maximum stay, initially, is one year and can be extended up to five.
Basic conditions
- Gather proof of property income (rentals) and proof of commercial property;
- Monthly earnings of €2800 euros per month;
- Have health and travel insurance;
- No criminal record.
Portugal’s digital nomad visa application process
The first step is to gather all the required documents by filling in the form. A visit to the consulate must be scheduled for the delivery of the documentation.
As with most digital nomad visas, you have to pay fees to obtain it. The resident permit costs €72, and the visa fee costs €83.
4. Mexico
Mexico is a country that has attracted overseas visitors and expats for a long time. The cuisine, the climate, and the hospitality of the Mexican people are the country’s main attractions.
Despite having a tourist visa with a maximum stay of six months, today there is already a temporary residence visa. It allows digital nomads to stay for one year, with the possibility to extend it to up to three years.

- You need to have an open company or work for another company that is outside Mexico;
- Have a monthly income of at least $1620 or have a total balance of $27,000.

A form must be filled in and presented, and then all you need to do is schedule an appointment with the consulate for the delivery of the documents. Not forgetting the payment of the fee, which will be given at the consulate.
5. Bermuda
The beautiful islands of Bermuda already have a residency programme for remote workers who can stay in the country for one year. The visa called “Work From Bermuda” is an adaptation and expansion of the old programme, which is also intended for digital nomads.
Basic conditions
- You will need to have an open company or work for another company that is outside Bermuda;
- It is not necessary to have a minimum income;
- The Covid-19 test should be done;
- The contracting of travel insurance is mandatory.

6. Estonia
Estonia was one of the first countries to offer E-residency, and in July 2020, the Estonian government released two new visas for digital nomads. One allows travellers to work for up to 3 months in the country, and the other for up to a year.
Estonia has numerous beautiful landscapes and castles, but more relevant to this article, is the fact that it is emerging as a world hub for digital entrepreneurship!
Basic conditions
- You must have an open company or work for another company that is outside of Estonia;
- You must be able to prove that you have earned at least, €4500 gross of tax per month over the last 6 months.

Fill in the form, schedule an appointment at the country’s embassy, and hand in the relevant documents. Finally, pay the fees, which can vary from €80 to €100.
7. Costa Rica
Costa Rica is another real dream destination, both for its natural beauty, and its culture. The Government has made massive strides in transforming the country’s tourism infrastructure, and is now setting its sights on attracting more foreign investment.
The Costa Rican digital nomad visa is known as “Rentista,” and gives travellers a permit of up to two years to stay in the country.
Basic conditions
You must have necessary documents proving a minimum income of $3,000 USD per month for two years. Another option is to make a deposit in the amount of $60,000 into a Costa Rican bank.

You can apply for this visa yourself, or with the help of a lawyer. The documents must be in the official language of the country (Spanish) and you must pay a fee of $250.
8. Iceland
Digital nomads can live, at least for a while, in stunning Iceland. Iceland is known for its wide variety of exotic natural landscapes, as well as their volcanoes and extreme climates.
The visa has a maximum period of 6 months, and if requested during the stay in the Schengen area, is only granted for 90 days.
Basic conditions
- Have a remote job or online business outside Iceland;
- Demonstrate a monthly income of €6,993;
- Have health or travel insurance;
- Have a criminal record certificate.

The process for obtaining a visa in Iceland is simple. You must apply online and pay a fee of €50. In this process, all scanned documents must be uploaded.
9. Malta
Malta is one of the most popular islands in the Mediterranean, and it receives visitors from all over the world. Digital nomads can now extend their stay on the island thanks to the “Digital Nomad Residence” permit.
This visa allows you to stay in this Mediterranean gem for up to one year, with the possibility of extending the period by renewing the visa again.
Basic conditions
- Being employed remotely outside Malta or having a registered business outside Malta;
- The gross monthly rent must exceed €2,700;
- Have annual health or travel insurance;
- Proof of a place of accommodation in Malta for the applicant;
- Criminal record certificate.

To apply for this permission it is necessary to collect documents, fill in the online application form and make the corresponding payment of €300.
10. Romania
If there is one thing that makes this country attractive for digital nomads, it is that Romania is renowned for its fast internet speed. Something every remote worker appreciates.
The visa for nomads in this country was approved in 2021, and grants visitors a stay permit of up to 12 months with the possibility of renewal. Not only that, but the cost of living in Romania is cheap.
Basic conditions
- Have an average monthly income of €3,300;
- Work for a company or have a company registered outside the country;
- Having no criminal record;
- Have health insurance valid in Romania.
- Proof of income for the last 6 months.

You can apply for this category of visa online, and the exact number of fees to be paid is currently unknown.
One of the documents to be submitted is a letter explaining the intention of the trip or stay in that country, as well as showing a provisional plan of what you want to see.
11. Czech Republic
This country has a rich history, as it is part of both Central, and Eastern Europe. The Czech Republic is a fantastic country and in addition to its great culture, it is more affordable compared to the rest of Europe.
Even though it is a little more complicated than most of the visas presented, the Zivno, as it is called, can be a great option for those who work remotely and want to live in an interesting new place.

- The country requires the digital nomad to have a business licence;
- Proof of accommodation for at least one year;
- Have at least 5,000 euros in the bank account;
- Pay the local tax ($80) every month.

This visa is a bit more bureaucratic, so I recommend that it is done through a specialised agency. You must gather all the documentation, visit the embassy and pay a fee of €100.
12. Georgia
The “Remotely from Georgia” is the name given to the visa for remote workers who want to live and work in Georgia. It has a low cost of living when compared to neighbouring countries and is still very charming because of its stunning mountain ranges.
Basic conditions
- You will need to have an open company or work for another company that is outside of Georgia;
- Have proof that you will be able to pay the country’s taxes;
- Have a monthly income of at least $2,000;
- Have travel insurance for at least six months.

The process for application follows the basics discussed so far. The steps are: fill out the form, separate and send the required documents, and pay the fee.
13. Croatia
Croatia is another country that has heavily expanded its tourism infrastructure in recent years, and when you see how beautiful the Croatian coastline is, it’s not wonder why!
Officially, after a long wait following its announcement, Croatia now has a digital nomad visa. This permission does not apply to citizens belonging to the European Union or any EEA (European Economic Area) country.
Although it is popularly known as the “digital nomad visa”, it is a residence permit.
Basic conditions
- IT or digital communications related work, for a company or your own, that is not registered in Croatia;
- Proof of income of at least €2,232. If the application is for 12 months, you must have a bank account fund of €26,790;
- Certificate of a criminal record from your country of origin;
- Proof of accommodation;
- A health insurance contract is mandatory.
Croatia’s digital nomad visa application process
If the applicant needs a visa to enter the country, he/she should apply at the embassy before travelling, either in person or online. Otherwise, you can apply for a Temporary Residence Permit when you are in Croatia, either at the consulate or at the police.
Once in the country, you must apply for an OIB, which is just an identification number. Submit the application with two photos and pay €55.80 for residence plus €61.10 for the visa.
14. Germany
Germany is a highly desirable country to live in. The quality of life and education in Germany makes the country a perfect place for young digital entrepreneurs wanting to expand their skill set.
Germany’s digital nomad visa is called: “Aufenthaltserlaubnis für selbständige Tätigkeit” or residence permit for self-employment. Remote workers are allowed to stay in the country from 6 months up to 3 years.
Basic conditions
- You will need to have a residential address in the country;
- Have health insurance;
- Proof of income;
- Demonstration of the type of work done so that the German government can identify whether it can be useful for the economy.
Germany’s digital nomad visa application process
To obtain a visa, it will be necessary to gather all supporting documents, including proof of residence in the country. Schedule an appointment for a visa interview and pay a fee of €100.
15. Antigua and Barbuda
Antigua and Barbuda are gorgeous Caribbean islands that have just entered the list of countries offering digital nomad visas.
The document is called Nomad Digital Residence (NDR) and is valid for 2 years, being directed to professionals who work remotely. Members of the same family can also get the visa; however, the income must be proved.
Basic conditions
- You will need to have an open company or work for another company that is outside Antigua and Barbuda;
- Have a monthly income of at least $50,000 per year;
- Have a health plan or travel insurance.

The visa application is simple and intuitive. Just fill out the form, provide proof that you do remote work, and pay the visa fees. The amounts vary from $1,500.00 to $3,000.00.
16. Barbados
Barbados is an island in the Caribbean and is ideal for those who enjoy picturesque beaches. Recently, the country also created a digital nomad visa, called “Barbados Welcome Stamp”.
Remote workers will be able to spend 12 months on the island, with the possibility of renewal.
Basic conditions
- Having a company or working for one that is outside Barbados;
- Have an income of at least $50,000 per year.

First you fill out the form, and then you will need to send the documentation. Finally, the fee must be paid. The amount is $2,000.
17. The Cayman Islands
The Cayman Islands is a British territory located in the Caribbean Sea, composed of three islands. Its natural beauty attracts the attention of travellers from all over the world.
The island nation has recently adopted the “Global Citizen Concierge” visa, a digital nomad visa giving the right to stay for up to 2 years.
The only detail that makes the digital nomad visa less attainable than in other countries is the proof of annual income. The amounts can reach up to $150,000 per year.
Basic conditions
- Being an employee of a company outside the Cayman Islands;
- To have a reference letter from a financial institution with a notarised signature;
- Criminal background check;
- Having health insurance is mandatory.
